Mommies Behind the Blog: Britt of Southern Mama & Child
We have a special guest today, Britt of Southern Mama & Child. I connected with Britt over instagram and it's been great watching her grow as a mom and as founder of Southern Mama & Child. She also writes her personal blog Brittany Louise. I think it's safe to say that she's an inspiration for all of us moms.NAME, OCCUPATION HOW MANY KIDS?-Britt- Stay At Home Mama, Blogger, and Lifestyle Photographer- 1 baby, Scarlett is 15 months.TELL US HOW YOUR TYPICAL DAY LOOKSOn a typical day, I wake up around 8am to get the day started. If my daughter isn’t awake I’ll get breakfast going and she usually wakes up within the hour. Most days we wake up at the same time. After breakfast, we play at home or go to play group with friends. Lunch time is at home or a friends house. After lunch is Scarlett’s long nap and this is when I get household chores done, write blog posts, or do photography edits. Scarlett wakes up and we either play at home or go to the park, library, or play group depending on what we did that morning. My husband is a medical student so his schedule is unpredictable. We hope he is home for dinner, but don’t hold our breath. Typically dinner is at 6 then we do bath, bedtime, and put Scarlett to sleep for 7:30. After she goes to sleep I usually do blog work or photography edits while my husband studies. We both stop working around 9-9:30 and watch a show together and relax. We try to be in bed by 11pm, but we are suckers for tv and sometimes can’t resist playing the next episode.HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR MOMMY STYLE?I definitely love classic styles with a twist. My everyday go to outfits are j.crew or gap shorts with a cute blouse. I love sheer tops with a tank under them lately. Some days I opt for sports tank and yoga pants/running shorts. I love to get dressed for events. This is where I find myself getting more creative and come out of my shell. V neck sheer tops, maxi dresses, and A-line dresses are my favorite looks. I love simple clothing and bold jewelry to top off a look. I’d say my style is classic glam.WHAT ESSENTIALS DO YOU CARRY INSIDE YOUR BAG?Besides baby items, I always carry Honest company chapstick, iPhone, sunglasses, and a pen. I am a pretty simple person when it comes to essentials.WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE ROOM IN YOUR HOUSE AND WHY?My favorite room in our home is our daughters nursery! It is the room we spent the most time on and made extra special. We painted and picked out every item in her room. My parents made a lot of her furniture or upholstery so the room was truly made with love. Since we are just renting we have held back on doing a lot of projects. Hopefully for residency we will own our own home and I can let all my projects run wild!WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE THING TO DO WHEN YOU HAVE SOME ALONE TIME?My favorite thing to do when I have time alone is to do calligraphy or watercolor art. I enjoyed art in high school and college so much. I miss the days where I had projects to turn in. These days I am lucky to finish or start new projects. I have done some logo and business branding lately with my art, so I am excited to step back into this area.THREE THINGS YOU CAN'T LIVE WITHOUTMy family + friends, our dog, and my camera.WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE GO-TO STORES FOR TOYS/KID'S CLOTHES?I order most of our toys from Amazon, alexandalexa.com, or Pottery Barn Kids. For clothing, we are southern at heart. We love Smocked Auctions for smocked clothing, Baby Gap for fun styles, and The Beaufort Bonnet Company for bonnets and accessories.WHAT'S THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE WITH BLOGGING, WORKING, AND BEING A MOMMY? HAVE YOU HIRED HELP?The biggest challenge is finding time to do it all and balancing family and work. I constantly feel like I need to check my phone for emails, desktop for stats, and social media for interactions. It’s tough. I’ve had to limit my work to nap time and when my daughter is sleeping at night. If my daughter is independently playing with herself then I will take 10-15 minutes out to check my desktop or phone for updates. I definitely have made it a point to leave my phone at my desk and my computer on sleep when my daughter is awake and playing with me.I have not hired anyone to come into my home per say, but I have enrolled my daughter in a Mother’s Day Out program which she goes to twice a week for a few hours. This helps me so much to get blogging and photography completed. If I have a photo shoot during the day I will occasionally have a sitter come to my house, but everything I do revolves around naps and Mother’s Day Out.WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE ACTIVITY TO DO WITH YOUR DAUGHTER?I love to read books with her. Lately, she will just come sit in my lap and bring me a book to read to her. It’s my favorite thing she does. I love that I get to have some quiet time with her when she isn’t squirming or running around.WHAT WORDS DO YOU LIVE BY?Everything Happens For A Reason. Every time something significant in my life happens, I always try to remember that there is a reason for it and I look on the bright side. This usually helps me get through tough situations.WHAT'S A CURRENT GOAL YOU ARE WORKING TOWARDS?My current goal is to maximize family time and to grow my blog, Southern Mama + Child. Both of these are so demanding, so it is difficult. I am hoping that I can find a routine that works better for me to where I can get more things done. I hope in the coming months that Southern Mama + Child can get more exposure so I can build a team to help me. I want it to grow, but I know that I will be putting in a lot more time before I can take any steps back. To read and get to know more about Britt link up with her through Southern Mama & Child.
