Ems' Unicorn-Themed 6th Birthday Party

Ems turned 6 on Sunday! And in preparation for her birthday party, I have to admit I watched a lot of YouTube videos on decorating cookies and cakes. Hours and hours. I still consider myself a novice baker even though I've been baking for years. Because although I'm pretty good with the basics, when it comes to decorating I'm still learning.

And yes, she asked for a unicorn themed party. So I planned one and made one happen.

I of course, turned our favorite sugar cookie recipe into unicorns and rainbows. The decorating was my challenge so I turned to YouTube videos. This YouTube video was my favorite of all. While watching it, I felt like I was in cookie decorating school. And I learned that to decorate a cookie you need to have piping consistency icing, and flooding consistency icing. I never knew that before. It's a great video for beginners so I highly recommend you watch it to learn the basics of cookie decorating.

For the unicorns, there are so many videos out there. Out of the ones I watched, I loved this YouTube video. But as you can see, I kept my unicorn cookies pretty simple.

And the rainbows. Not as easy as they look. I think the unicorns were so much easier. Watch this YouTube video to learn how to do a simple rainbow design. And here's a tip, I suggest you get a food marker to outline your design. It makes decorating a lot more simple.

And because we needed more birthday party treats, I made this unicorn popcorn bark. And here's the recipe.

Unicorn Popcorn Bark

On a sheet of tin foil, spread a thin layer of mini pretzel sticks and Chex cereal {I like the rice Chex}. Drizzle with melted white chocolate. Layer with popcorn. Drizzle more chocolate. And top with Lucky Charms. Pick some of the marshmallows to decorate. Let it dry for 20 minutes. Then break up into pieces.

I ended up taking these funfetti unicorn cupcakes to school to celebrate with her class. Everything was homemade except for the decoration which I ordered from The Cake Fairy LA. See cupcake recipe below {it's the same cake recipe}. I just added sprinkles.

I also had this bowl of ice full of Perrier Peach for the adults, because it's not a party unless there's Perrier.

And my homemade unicorn cake. Completely homemade and decorated by yours truly with the help of this video. The ears may have been too big, but Ems loved it. Big ears and all! I found the unicorn design here.
